BODY NO ORGANS

Rachael Haigh

An excerpt

hallelujah sits on the porch
beat.
someone is toying around with a theremin

man on porch: do you think we knew each other?

hallelujah: it’s like a riddle or a puzzle

man on porch: you convinced me

hallelujah: of what?

man on porch: hell. i’m in hell. we’re in hell. this is hell

hallelujah: what was it that i said?

man on porch: when someone dies, they probably imagine heaven will be next. I was sure of it. i had suffered. truly. i remember it. 7-11. hershey bar with almonds. plastic, plastic, plastic. the heat that makes the world wet. the planet becomes the  ocean. thick like gravy. gravy then boom. my heart is in my eyeballs as it thunders. i pulsate. i’m a nerve. i’m an automatic nervous system. a guided missile towards my porch. the real porch, my wife. she smiles. i smiles. she laughs, i laughs. thunder, rain, wind, flood. wiped out. wiped off the world. we came into death laughing.
with such joy, i was assured; heaven here i come
but now
you.
now,
this loop

hallelujah: it’s just like jack

man on porch: Jack Jack Jack, who the fuck is Jack?

hallelujah: Jack Kennedy. They killed him, yaknow? Shot his head off but see everyone looks to the “kill” not the “they”. Green grassy knoll. Multiple shots were heard by various witnesses. Anti-Castro cubans, Oswald in Mexico. Jack Ruby, there’s an individual. A laundry list, I could write an encyclopedia on that one man’s name.

man on porch: Is this what we’ve been reduced to? This level of conversation?

hallelujah: That’s what THEY want. For us to put it down. Ignore it, forget it ever happened. Dull our brains, slowly drift out to sea. They want us to drown. I’m not drowning! I refuse to drown! I’ll get to the bottom of it.

hallelujah gets off the porch

what am i doing?
i’m not in hell
but if i am,
i’m getting reassurance

man on porch: rage on

hallelujah: What did you choose? what did you all choose? To stand on one patch of life?! I’ll live a hundred lives!! I’ll live a thousand lives!! & their derivatives! I’ll exhaust the world! I’ll go until the universal clock dies & even then I’ll go on! You can’t stop me! You won’t stop me! I’ll live even in death

hallelujah opens the trapdoor

imp/goblin/demon: wait, you have to give me an organ

hallelujah: you gonna stop me?

hallelujah goes thru the trapdoor
